How to size a varsity letter for a jacket

The difference between a 5" and a 6" letter is bigger than an inch. A quick guide to picking the right height.

How to size a varsity letter for a jacket

The classic jacket letter is 6" tall. It fills the left chest of an adult medium without crowding the pocket, and it is the size most schools specify when they issue an award.

Go to 7" or 8" for a back panel, or when the letter is the only thing on the garment. Those sizes look heavy on a chest and are usually a mistake there.

Drop to 4" or 5" for sweaters, cardigans and youth sizing, and for anywhere a second patch has to sit alongside the letter. A 3" letter is a sleeve or a keepsake piece.

When in doubt, cut the shape out of paper and pin it to the garment before you order. It takes two minutes and it settles the argument.
