Caring for chenille so it lasts a lifetime

Chenille is tougher than it looks, but it has opinions about heat. Washing, storing and repairing, plainly.

Caring for chenille so it lasts a lifetime

Spot clean where you can. Cold water, a little mild soap and a soft brush will lift most of what ends up on a jacket.

If the garment must go through a wash, turn it inside out, use cold water on a gentle cycle, and hang it to dry. Heat is what mats the yarn — a dryer will flatten a letter faster than a decade of wear.

Never iron directly on chenille. If you need to press the garment, work from the inside with a cloth between the iron and the patch.

Store jackets on a wide hanger with room on either side. Chenille recovers from being squashed, but not from being squashed for five years.
